What Is A Ground Source Heat Pump?

A ground source heat pump (GSHP) is a renewable heating system that extracts heat from the ground to provide space heating and hot water for a building. Unlike an air source heat pump, which takes heat from the air, a ground source heat pump uses the relatively constant temperature of the ground as a heat source, making it highly efficient even in colder weather.

A few metres down, the ground stays at a fairly steady temperature all year round. As a result, a ground source system keeps performing well even in the depths of winter, when the air outside is at its coldest.

How Does A Ground Source Heat Pump Work?

  1. Heat collection: Pipes called a ground loop are buried in your land, either in trenches or in a borehole. A fluid flows through them and absorbs heat from the ground.
  2. Heat transfer: The warmed fluid passes through a heat exchanger inside the heat pump, handing its heat to a refrigerant.
  3. Compression: The refrigerant is compressed, which raises its temperature.
  4. Distribution: That heat then warms your radiators, underfloor heating and hot water.

Ground source systems often produce 3 to 4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity used, so very little energy goes to waste.
There are two main options, and the right one depends on your land.

Is A Ground Source Heat Pump Right For Your Property?

Ground source heat pumps tend to work best for:

Around Presteigne and the Welsh borders, many properties have the space a ground loop needs. However, if land is limited, air source heat pumps may be a simpler choice. We’ll always give you an honest recommendation, even if it’s not ground source.

GSHP Installations In Presteigne

We look after every stage, so you deal with one team from start to finish.
  1. Site survey: We visit your property, check the land and work out how much heat each room needs.
  2. System design: We choose the right ground loop and heat pump size for your home or business.
  3. Groundworks: The trenches are dug or the borehole is drilled, then the ground loop is laid.
  4. Installation: We fit the heat pump unit indoors and connect it to your heating & hot water.
  5. Set-up & handover: We fine-tune flow temperatures and controls, then show you how it all works.

We supply and install the full system, then stay on hand for ongoing support. You can see examples of our work in our gallery.

Ground Source Heating For Farms & Businesses

Farms, rural businesses, holiday lets and larger buildings often have both the land and the heating demand that suit ground source. Find out more about our commercial heat pumps service. You can also add solar thermal panels to give your hot water an extra boost in the sunnier months.

Areas We Cover

We’re based in Presteigne and install ground source heat pumps throughout Powys and Herefordshire, including Builth Wells, Hay-on-Wye, Hereford, Leominster and Llandrindod Wells, plus the rural villages and farms in between.

Heat Pump Servicing & Repairs

A ground source system is built to last. Ground loops can typically last 50 years or more, while the heat pump itself usually lasts around 20 to 25 years. Even so, regular heat pump servicing helps keep it running at its best. We check the heat pump unit, ground loop pressures, circulation pumps and controls, catching small issues before they grow.

If your system develops a fault, our heat pump repairs service is here to help, with emergency call-outs available every day. We also work on systems fitted by other installers, and we offer ongoing maintenance plans.

FAQs

  • Highly energy-efficient, often producing 3–4 kW of heat for every 1 kW of electricity used

  • Provides low-carbon heating, reducing energy bills and environmental impact

  • Works well for large homes or new builds where underfloor heating or low-temperature radiators are feasible

  • Long lifespan: ground loops can last 50+ years, while the heat pump itself lasts around 20–25 years

Air Source Heat Pump: Extracts heat from the outside air.

Ground Source Heat Pump: Extracts heat from the ground via buried loops of pipe.

ASHP = easier, cheaper upfront, good for most homes.

GSHP = more efficient long-term, lower running costs, requires more space and higher initial investment.

  • Heat collection – Pipes (called a ground loop) are buried horizontally or vertically in the garden or land surrounding the property. A fluid circulates through these pipes, absorbing heat from the ground.

  • Heat transfer – The warmed fluid passes through a heat exchanger in the heat pump, transferring heat to the refrigerant inside the system.

  • Compression – The refrigerant is compressed, raising its temperature further.

  • Distribution – The heat is then used to warm water for radiators, underfloor heating, or domestic hot water supply.
